Elliott Smith (1969-2003) was an American singer-songwriter and musician from Portland, Oregon. He was widely acclaimed for his highly personal lyrics and his distinctive voice, which was often compared to a "bleak whine." Smith was signed to the independent record label Kill Rock Stars in 1994 and released his self-titled debut album that year. He gained further recognition for his second album, Either/Or (1997), which featured the songs "Between the Bars," "Angeles" and "Say Yes." His third and fourth albums, XO (1998) and Figure 8 (2000), featured the singles "Waltz #2 (XO)" and "Junk Bond Trader," respectively.

Smith's most acclaimed work was his posthumous release, From a Basement on the Hill (2004). The album featured the singles "Pretty (Ugly Before)" and "Coast to Coast," and won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Other standout albums include Roman Candle (1994), Elliott Smith (1995), and New Moon (2007).

An interesting fact about Elliott Smith is that he was a classically trained pianist and violinist. He was also known for his intricate fingerpicking style of guitar playing.
