Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer and songwriter. She was born in Newport News, Virginia on April 25, 1917. She is often referred to as the "First Lady of Song" and the "Queen of Jazz".
Fitzgerald began singing professionally at the age of 17. She went on to become one of the most beloved jazz singers of all time, with hits such as βA-Tisket, A-Tasketβ, βDream a Little Dream of Meβ, and βIt Donβt Mean a Thing (If It Ainβt Got That Swing)β. She also recorded many acclaimed albums, such as βElla Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbookβ, βElla Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbookβ, and βElla Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbookβ.
Fitzgerald was awarded 14 Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was also the first African-American woman to win a Grammy Award.
