Dobie Gray (born Lawrence Darrow Brown) is an American soul singer and songwriter, best known for his 1965 hit, “The ‘In’ Crowd”. Born in Texas in 1940, Gray grew up singing in church and was inspired by R&B and country music. After moving to Los Angeles, he was signed to a recording contract in the early 1960s.

Gray released his debut album, Look-A-Here, in 1965 and the album included his hit single, “The ‘In’ Crowd”. The song became a major hit, peaking at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Gray followed up with a number of other singles and albums, including Drift Away (1973), Midnight Diamond (1976), and Love Is (1978).
