Disco Vinyl Records

Stylised form of soul, developed in the early 1970s as dance music in nightclubs. At its peak in the late 1970s, disco is the leading type of music in dance halls.

Disco emerges in the early 1970s as a calmer, more rhythmic form of soul in which songs are based on a groove. At first, the leading productions were by Gamble & Huff (e.g. Three Degrees) and Casey & Finch (e.g. KC & The Sunshine Band, George McCrae). Later, Giorgio Morodor (Donna Summer) and Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers (Chic, Sister Sledge) defined the sound of the genre. At its peak in the late 1970s, disco was the leading type of music in dance halls; in the years that followed, the music became increasingly electronic and broke down into a number of sub-styles, from which house eventually emerged. The influence of the genre also extends to the sound carrier. When, in the mid-seventies, DJs began experimenting with mixing records together, a record format of its own came into being: the 12" or disco single.
