Coloured Balls is an Australian rock band that was formed in Melbourne in 1972. The band was founded by Lobby Loyde, a guitarist and songwriter who had previously been a member of the Purple Hearts and Wild Cherries. The original lineup included Loyde on guitar, Gary Dixon on vocals, John “Rabbit” Bundrick on keyboards, Bill Putt on bass, and Gil Matthews on drums.
The band released their first album, Ball Power, in 1973, which was followed by Heavy Metal Kid in 1974. The two albums featured a mix of hard rock and blues-influenced songs that established the band as one of the leading forces in the Australian hard rock scene. Ball Power also featured the classic song “Black Eyed Bruiser”, which has become a fan favorite.
The band’s third album, The Original Coloured Balls, was released in 1975 and featured a more blues-influenced sound. The album included the single “Good Times”, which has become one of the band’s signature songs. The album also featured the track “Evil”, which has become one of the most covered songs by other Australian bands.
In addition to their albums, Coloured Balls also released a number of singles, including “Rock Me Baby” and “Rock and Roll Lady”. The band disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 2012 and have since released a live album and a number of singles.
An interesting fact about Coloured Balls is that they were the first Australian band to be featured on the BBC’s “Top of the Pops” in 1974. They performed their hit single “Good Times”, which was a huge success and helped to boost the band’s popularity in the UK.
