Charles Munch was a French conductor and violinist, who was born in 1895 and passed away in 1968. He was well-known for his interpretations of the works of Berlioz, Debussy, Ravel and Franck. He was the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1949-1962 and was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1963. Munch is particularly renowned for his recordings of French orchestral works. His recordings of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Debussy’s La Mer, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé and Franck’s Symphony in D Minor are among his most acclaimed works. He also recorded other works such as the Brahms Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Mozart’s Requiem. An interesting fact about Charles Munch is that he was an avid music collector, and his collection contained more than 10,000 items from all periods of music. He often used the collection to create unique and dynamic performances.
