Women + Country is Jakob Dylan’s second solo album, released in 2010 and produced by T-Bone Burnett. Genre: folk rock / Americana. The record expands on the stripped-down style of his debut with fuller instrumentation including horns, pedal steel, fiddle, and rich backing vocals from Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. Burnett’s production gives the album a warm, textured feel that leans into country and folk traditions, creating a sound that is rustic, atmospheric and deeply rooted.
The songs explore themes of displacement, heartbreak, change and quiet resilience. Dylan’s voice is intimate and understated, carrying a weathered quality that suits the reflective tone of tracks like We Don’t Live Here Anymore, Standing Eight Count and Everybody’s Hurting. Women + Country is less about big hooks and more about mood, storytelling and subtle emotional weight, showing Dylan moving further into contemplative and mature songwriting.
Reviews
“While Jakob Dylan may possess a surname and lineage of rock and roll royalty, … on Women + Country, Dylan aimed to take that same traditional sound and expand upon it.” — Consequence
“Women and Country rectifies the problems Dylan had in his first solo outings, strengthening his sound, and coming across as the best album he has recorded since (Breach).” — Sputnikmusic
“The sad truth is that Dylan’s songs here don’t really merit the gorgeous production job.” — Slant Magazine
