Buena Vista Social Club is a Grammy-winning Cuban supergroup founded in 1996 by American guitarist Ry Cooder and Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González. The original members of the group were mostly veteran Cuban musicians from the 1950s, including Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, and Ibrahim Ferrer.
The group gained international fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1997. The album, produced by Ry Cooder, was a critical and commercial success, earning a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album and going on to become one of the best-selling Latin albums of all time. The album was followed by two more successful releases, Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer (2001) and Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall (2008).
Some of their standout songs include "Chan Chan", "El Cuarto de Tula", and "La Bayamesa".
An interesting fact about the group is that the original members of Buena Vista Social Club had not performed together for nearly 40 years prior to the group's formation.
