Billy Paul was a soul and jazz singer, best known for his hit song “Me and Mrs. Jones”. He was born Paul Williams in Philadelphia in 1934, and began his career singing gospel music in his family’s church choir. In the 1950s, he began singing in jazz clubs, and in 1958 he signed with King Records.
Billy Paul released his debut album, Feelin’ Good at the Cadillac Club, in 1968. This was followed by Ebony Woman (1969) and Going East (1971). His biggest hit was “Me and Mrs. Jones”, released in 1972 and reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other standout albums include 360 Degrees of Billy Paul (1972), War of the Gods (1973), and Only the Strong Survive (1974).
In addition to his singing career, Billy Paul was also an actor, appearing in films such as Across 110th Street (1972), Uptown Saturday Night (1974), and Busting (1974).
An interesting fact about Billy Paul is that he was one of the few black artists to be featured in the musical Hair. He sang the song “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” in the original Broadway production.
