Carter was a multi-instrumentalist, playing the alto saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and violin. He was also an arranger, writing music for the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman.
Carter's standout albums include 'Harlem Renaissance' (1944), 'Further Definitions' (1961), 'Central City Sketches' (1988), and 'Aspects' (1993). His standout songs include 'When Lights Are Low', 'In the Mood', 'The Very Thought of You', and 'Limehouse Blues'.
