Benny Carter (1907-2003) was an American jazz musician, composer, and arranger who was one of the most important and influential figures in jazz history. Carter was a multi-instrumentalist, playing the alto saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and violin. He was also an arranger, writing music for the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman.

Carter's standout albums include 'Harlem Renaissance' (1944), 'Further Definitions' (1961), 'Central City Sketches' (1988), and 'Aspects' (1993). His standout songs include 'When Lights Are Low', 'In the Mood', 'The Very Thought of You', and 'Limehouse Blues'.

An interesting fact about Benny Carter is that he was the first African American to arrange music for a Hollywood film, writing the score for the 1933 movie 'The Gold Diggers of 1933'. He was also the first African American to be inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame.
