Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist who is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He wrote operas, choral music, chamber music, and symphonies. His most famous works include the opera Peter Grimes (1945), the War Requiem (1962), and the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1945).
Britten's most acclaimed albums include The Turn of the Screw (1954), Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings (1943), and A Ceremony of Carols (1942). Notable songs include “Rejoice in the Lamb” (1943), “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” (1945), and “The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard” (1948).
An interesting fact about Britten is that he was a conscientious objector during World War II, and instead of joining the military, he volunteered as an ambulance driver for the League of Friends.
