Ben Webster (1909-1973) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and learned to play the saxophone at an early age. He is renowned for his big, warm sound and for his ability to “swing” with a relaxed, melodic style. He played with a variety of jazz ensembles, including Duke Ellington’s Orchestra, Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and with his own band.
Some of Webster’s standout albums include Soulville (1957), King of the Tenors (1963), and See You at the Fair (1964). His most famous songs include “Cotton Tail”, “C Jam Blues”, “Perdido”, and “Chelsea Bridge”.
An interesting fact about Ben Webster is that he was known as the “King of the Tenors”, a title that was bestowed upon him by his friend and colleague Duke Ellington.
