Art Pepper (1925-1982) was an American alto saxophonist and clarinetist. He was one of the most influential figures in West Coast jazz and a highly respected improviser. Pepper began playing professionally at age 14 and quickly became one of the most important figures in the Los Angeles jazz scene. He was known for his hard-driving style and unique tone.
Pepper recorded more than 60 albums as a leader, including many classic albums for the Contemporary label, such as Art Pepper + Eleven, Living Legend, and The Trip. He also collaborated with many other jazz greats, including Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, and Stan Getz. His recordings with jazz pianist George Cables are especially noteworthy.
Pepper's best-known song is his signature tune, "Straight Life," which was composed by Pepper and was first recorded in 1961. Other popular songs include "Surf Ride," "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," and "Move."
An interesting fact about Art Pepper is that he served an extended prison sentence in the 1950s due to drug addiction. He was able to turn his life around and eventually become a successful jazz musician and one of the most influential figures in West Coast jazz.
