Art Farmer (1928-1999) was an American jazz trumpet player and flugelhornist who was a major figure in the bebop and hard bop movements of the 1950s and '60s. He was known for his lyrical sound, virtuosic technique, and unique improvisational style.
Farmer was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and began playing the trumpet at age 12. He studied music at the University of Kansas, and then moved to New York City in 1948 to pursue a career in jazz. He soon became part of the burgeoning bebop scene, playing with a wide range of musicians, including Clifford Brown, Horace Silver, and Dizzy Gillespie.
Farmer's discography includes dozens of albums, both as a leader and a sideman. His standout albums include The Art Farmer Quartet (1956), Early Art (1957), and Farmer's Market (1956). Some of his most well-known songs include "Soul Eyes," "The Time and the Place," and "Crisis."
An interesting fact about Art Farmer is that he was the first jazz musician to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship. The fellowship enabled him to study and experiment with composing music for the flugelhorn, an instrument he became closely associated with throughout his career.
