He had a successful solo career and was also part of the groups Wax, Bryndle, and musically collaborated with Art Garfunkel, Graham Gouldman, Graham Nash, J.D. Souther, and Linda Ronstadt.

Gold's most successful solo albums were What's Wrong with This Picture? (1976), All This and Heaven Too (1978) and Whirlwind (1980). His most successful single was the 1977 hit "Lonely Boy", which peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and at number 2 in Canada. Other popular songs include "Thank You for Being a Friend" (1978), "Never Let Her Slip Away" (1978), "The Things We Do For Love" (1976), and "The Old Songs" (1981).
