The George Shearing Quintet

The George Shearing Quintet was a jazz group formed in London in 1949 by pianist George Shearing. The original lineup included guitar, bass, drums, and vibraphone. Shearing’s style was unique and hard to categorize; it combined elements of bebop, swing, and Latin jazz.

The George Shearing Quintet became famous for their recordings on the MGM label in the 1950s. Their classic albums include The George Shearing Quintet in Hi-Fi (1956), Satin Affair (1958), and Latin Lace (1959). They also released several live albums, including The George Shearing Quintet at the London House (1959) and The George Shearing Quintet at the London House Vol. 2 (1960).

The George Shearing Quintet released several popular songs during their time together, including “September in the Rain”, “Lullaby of Birdland”, “Conception”, “Mambo in Chimes”, and “Moonglow”.

An interesting fact about The George Shearing Quintet is that their debut album was recorded in just one day!
