Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was an American singer, actor, and civil rights activist. He was a renowned baritone with a four-octave range, and he became famous for his rendition of African American spirituals, opera, and folk songs. He was also a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and a political activist who advocated for the rights of African Americans.
Robeson released a series of acclaimed albums in the 1940s, including Ballad for Americans, Paul Robeson Sings, and The Spirit of Old Black Joe. His best-known songs include "Ol' Man River", "Deep River", "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen", and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child".
An interesting fact about Robeson is that he was the first African-American to star in a feature film, appearing in the 1929 silent movie The Emperor Jones. He was also the first black actor to play Othello on Broadway in 1943.
