Joe Tex

Joe Tex was an American soul and funk singer who was born in Rogers, Texas in 1933. He began singing in church as a child and formed his first group, the Gospel Stars, when he was 14. He made his recording debut in 1955 and had several minor hits over the next few years. His breakthrough came in 1965 with the single "Hold What You've Got".

Tex released a string of hit singles over the next decade, including "Skinny Legs and All" (1967), "I Gotcha" (1972), and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)" (1977). His albums included I Gotcha (1972), From the Roots Came the Rapper (1975), and The Love You Save (1982).

An interesting fact about Joe Tex is that he was the first African-American to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1967. He also became the first artist to win the Best R&B Vocal Performance award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 1968.
