He was best known for his work in Kansas City jazz during the 1940s, when he played with Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, and Buster Smith. McShann's most famous composition is the 1940 blues song, "Confessin' the Blues".

McShann's career began in the 1930s when he formed his own band and began performing in clubs throughout the Midwest. His first recorded song, "Hootie Blues", was released in 1941.
