Raw Power, the third studio album by The Stooges (credited as Iggy and the Stooges), marked a bold transformation in the band’s sound and legacy. Released in 1973, the album shifted away from the groove-oriented feel of their earlier work in favor of a fiercely anthemic hard-rock approach, driven by James Williamson’s jagged, powerful guitar lines and Iggy Pop’s visceral vocal delivery, with David Bowie also contributing in post-production. Though it initially met with little commercial success, Raw Power later gained a devoted cult following and came to be widely recognized as a groundbreaking precursor to punk rock.
Over time, Raw Power has been acknowledged as one of rock’s most influential albums. Its raw energy and unrelenting spirit inspired countless artists across genres, from punk and grunge to alternative rock. Its unpolished sound, fierce intensity, and unapologetic attitude have cemented its status as a timeless touchstone in the evolution of aggressive, uncompromising rock music.
Reviews
“the Stooges have used the recording studio as more than a recapturing of their live show, and with David Bowie helping out in the mix, there is an ongoing swirl of sound that virtually drags you into the speakers.” – Rolling Stone
“It speaks volumes about the songs' pure immediacy and charisma that, even in its original mix, Raw Power became the album most responsible for giving the Stooges a life after death.” – Pitchfork
“By most accounts, tensions were high during the recording of Raw Power, and the album sounds like the work of a band on its last legs -- though rather than grinding to a halt, Iggy & the Stooges appeared ready to explode like an ammunition dump.” – AllMusic
