Moodymann – DJ-Kicks (3xLP)

The eccentric DJ and producer doesn't bear his name for nothing: Moodymann does what his mood dictates. Kenny Dixon Jr. therefore has a reputation for being a difficult artist. When mixing the 52nd edition of the "DJ Kicks" series, the Detroit legend was obviously in a good mood. If you read the track list, it quickly becomes clear that Moodymann is very tame. An impression that is reinforced as you listen! During the mix, which lasts around 75 minutes and is his first ever commercial release, Moodymann focuses on Detroit, house, hip-hop and soul in the style of Theo Parrish, Omar S and Flying Lotus with tracks by Nightmares On Wax, Fort Knox Five, Kings Of Tomorrow, Anne Clark and Lady Alma, among others. In other words, he concentrates on soulfulness, deepness and rich grooves, and thus on the essentials. As you would expect, the mix picks up the tempo charmingly towards the end and almost takes on dancefloor qualities.
