Britain's music press, always on the lookout for the "next big thing", has had COLDPLAY in its sights for some time. With their critically acclaimed debut album, these flawless pop jewels of British polish, COLDPLAY are now primed to enter the premier league of Brit-pop, as their sensational number 1 entry into the UK charts has shown. "Parachutes" is pure song magic that leaves listeners moved and sounds so heartbreaking that a few tears are allowed to flow.
At the beginning of 1999, the quartet was already at the top of the New Musical Express list of bands not to be missed. Since their EP "The Blue Room" with its unconventionally fragile pop songs, COLDPLAY have been riding a wave of success. The unanimous opinion of British weeklies to position COLDPLAY stylistically somewhere between Radiohead and Travis can hardly be denied.
After the single "Shiver" reached the top 40 and recently "Yellow" even reached number four in the UK charts, COLDPLAY are now presenting their eagerly awaited debut album "Parachutes", which the band recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool together with producer Ken Nelson (Gomez, Badly Drawn Boy). Although the album contains some optimistic moments, COLDPLAY have remained true to their line of profoundly dealing with big, tragic feelings. The majority of the songs are as melancholic as they are poetic, as introverted as they are intoxicatingly beautiful. And even in the anthemic pop vignettes "Shiver" and "Yellow", the knowledge of their transience is hidden behind all the youthful energy. "Parachutes" is also an impressively coherent and consistent opus. A precision landing par excellence.
For the first time, "Parachutes" is being produced by Coldplay on EcoRecord. EcoRecord sounds and looks just as good as a conventional vinyl record, but is made from 100% recyclable PET instead of PVC. EcoRecords are also injection molded, which means energy savings of up to 85% compared to the traditional vinyl process. Parachutes is Coldplay's Grammy and Brit Award-winning, 9-times platinum debut album. The album was produced by the band, Ken Nelson and one track by Chris Allison (High Speed). The album contains the singles "Shiver", "Yellow", "Trouble" and "Don't Panic".
