Soul On Your Side is the debut (and only) studio album by The Rhythm Makers, released in 1976 on Vigor Records. The Bronx-based funk / disco outfit crafted a blend of soulful grooves, clavinets, slap bass and sparse vocals. The title track shares DNA with GQ’s later hit “Disco Nights,” retaining its rawer edges and lyrical urgency.
The album leans into dancefloor sensibility with deep funk undertones. Tracks like “Can You Feel It” and “Zone” push rhythmic energy, while cuts like “Soul On Your Side” soften the edge with melody and social commentary. Though firmly planted in disco’s era, the band’s approach is gritty and soulful rather than glossy, giving the music a timeless character.
Reviews
“Superlative disco-funk … the signature is similar to other contemporary disco-funk groups … [‘Soul On Your Side’ is] rawer and more real.” — SoulBrother (Album of the Day feature)
