With their album Gentlemen in 1993, the Afghan Whigs not only celebrated their worldwide breakthrough as a post-grunge band with a soul influence, they also set a milestone for the alternative rock of the nineties that still resonates today. It was the fourth album by the band from Cincinnati, Ohio, and their first major release for Elektra/Warner. With songs such as the single Debonair and the title track Gentlemen, Gentlemen, which was highly praised by renowned trade magazines such as the US Rolling Stone, is regarded as the most successful and best album by the Afghan Whigs, who are still active today after a few interruptions.
The Afghan Whigs formed back in 1986 and released their debut Big Top Halloween on their own label "Ultrasuede". in 1989, they signed to the cult label "Sub Pop" and released their second album "Up In It" the following year, which was produced by Nirvana producer Jack Endino. After the release of the album "Congregation" (1992), they switched to Elektra and recorded "Gentlemen" (1993) and "Black Love" (1996) before releasing the album 1965 after another label change. in 2001, they announced their break-up as the band members lived too far apart to rehearse regularly. After reuniting only briefly in 2006, they have been performing live again frequently since 2012 and released a new album entitled "Do The Beast" in January 2014.
