Sunset to Dawn is a studio album by pianist Kenny Barron, recorded on 2 April 1973 at RCA Studios, NYC and released later that year on Muse Records. The album features Barron on piano and electric piano, accompanied by Bob Cranshaw (electric bass), Freddie Waits (drums), and percussionists Richard Landrum and Warren Smith. Across its six tracks — including “Sunset,” “Swamp Demon,” “Delores Street, S.F.” and “Dawn” — the record balances jazz improvisation with soulful rhythms and a touch of electric texture.
Barron pushes gently into new territory here, blending acoustic lyricism and electric experimentation. The rhythm section offers flexible grooves and rhythmic coloration via congas and vibraphone, supporting solos that shift between warmth and exploratory edge. The compositions feel internal yet expressive, offering a snapshot of Barron stepping into his voice as a leader and composer.
Reviews
“Kenny Barron could easily go unidentified … on the three numbers on which he plays electric piano … utilizes electricity with intelligence and creativity. His songs are moody and complex yet somewhat accessible and this underrated set would certainly surprise some of his current fans.” — Scott Yanow, AllMusic
