Say She She, the disco-tinged funk band with punk chic from New York City, have announced today that their politically charged and dancefloor-filling third album "Cut & Rewind" will be released. Among the news is that Say She She have signed to drink sum wtr.
Led by the vocal trio of Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown, the group take their cues from the likes of Minnie Ripperton, Rotary Connection, Liquid Liquid and ESG. Cut & Rewind expand their scope by incorporating elements of Lonnie Liston Smith and the Lijadu Sisters into their sonic palette while channeling the spirit of contemporary peers like Lambrini Girls and Amyl and the Sniffers to create 12 new, original, sizzling songs, a forward grooving, psychedelic soundscape of pulsing disco beats, celestial whistle tones and soaring three-part harmonies.
Beneath the physical exterior of these songs, however, bubbles a sense of righteous rebellion: "She Who Dares" is a call to arms against a near-future dystopia in which women's rights have been decimated worldwide; "Disco Life" denounces the racism and homophobia of Steve Dahl's 1979 "Disco Demolition Night" and reclaims the dance floor as a "playing field where all are free". "Cut & Rewind" is protest music in the guise of a sweat-inducing, hip-shaking and mind-expanding pleasure.
Say She She have experienced an enormous rise in just three years since the release of their debut album "Prism" in 2022. They returned in 2023 with "Silver", a double LP that landed at number 1 on KCRW's list of the best albums of the year. The BBC also voted them into their list of the best artists of the year. "Silver" led to appearances on Later...with Jools Holland and the Kelly Clarkson Show, festival debuts including Bonnaroo and Glastonbury (where they played four sets in just 24 hours), and a sold-out 3000-capacity Roundhouse in London.
Say She She, whose name is a tribute to Nile Rodgers, began writing and recording 'Cut & Rewind' shortly after completing their international 'Silver' tour. For a series of short, intense sessions, Brown, Cunningham and Malik met with their rhythm section Dan Hastie, Sam Halterman, Dale Jennings and Sergio Rios at Rios' studio Killion Sound in North Hollywood.
Reviews
“Disco feels like somewhat of a difficult genre to innovate in … Say She She … falsify that idea … it at times combines luscious vocal harmonies and light shimmers of a synthesiser with often angular bass and guitar lines … to bring it into a more obscure and appropriate modern world.” — Far Out
“Cut & Rewind is a smart, diverse set of songs that finds Say She She embracing their strengths while stretching themselves in new directions.” — The Fire Note
“Say She She’s Cut & Rewind is a record that brims with urgency … the opening title track sets the tone with a confident sweep of harmonies and a groove that immediately pulls the listener into their signature ‘discodelic’ world.” — No More Workhorse
