In composition theory, a coda - from the Italian for drag, tail - refers to the final section of a work in which the leading themes are summarized. Jimmy Page appropriately titled Led Zeppelin's last studio album, two years after the death of drummer John Bonham and the official breakup of the band, as a "coda." The album's eight tracks were previously unreleased songs, recorded between 1970 and 1978.The circumstances surrounding John Bonham's death on September 25, 1980, made waves. In a bed in Jimmy Page's house in Windsor, the drummer choked in his sleep on his own vomit. Excessive alcohol consumption was always cited as an explanation. The remaining members of Led Zeppelin quickly decided to break up the band. In a press release they declared it impossible to continue without Bonham.Bootlegs of unreleased material soon began to circulate among fans, who by no means wanted to forget Led Zeppelin. Rumors said that the band had to release one more album to fulfill his contracts. There were still a few tracks from the recordings of "In Through The Out Door". And Jimmy Page went to the archives for the first time to sift through the unreleased recordings and fill an album with them."Coda" appears as the only one of the Led Zeppelin Deluxe Editions with two companion discs with a total of 15 songs recorded between 1968 and 1974. The oldest song in the collection, the feverish blues jam "Sugar Mama" was recorded in 1968 at Olympic Studios, during the sessions for the debut album. The song was finished, but never released until now. "Baby Come On Home" was also from the same session. The previously unreleased track "St. Tristan's Sword" is a rollicking instrumental recorded during the Led Zeppelin III sessions in 1970.
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant set out on a fabled trip to India in 1972 to perform with the Bombay Orchestra. The recordings from that session are now being released for the first time. Other highlights include an early version of "When The Levee Breaks" titled "If It Keeps On Raining" and the instrumental mix of "Poor Tom" from 1970. From the Physical Graffiti sessions there is a rough mix of "The Wanton Song" and another alternate version of "In The Light".The 2015 reissue of "Coda" completes the cycle of Led Zeppelin reissues. Jimmy Page announced that there was now nothing left in the archives to release either. The whole series pays tribute to the legacy of the hard rock pioneers in the most excellent way. "Coda" sets the final point, without which the collection is not complete.Original album newly remastered on 180g vinyl in gatefold sleeve replicating the original album, with 8-color embossed printing.Review
