Funkadelic is the debut studio album by Funkadelic, released in 1970 via Westbound Records. It heralds the sound of George Clinton’s P-Funk collective by fusing psychedelic rock, soul, and funk into a raw, experimental hybrid. Tracks like “Mommy, What’s a Funkadelic?” and “I’ll Bet You” are rough-hewn but potent, pairing fuzzed guitars and swampy grooves with gospel-inflected vocals. The album isn’t about radio hits—it’s about mood, vision, and boundary pushing.
Though uneven in spots, Funkadelic laid the groundwork for the band’s evolution. The looser jams, sprawling arrangements, and willingness to let songs dissolve into noise show a group not content to repeat conventions. With this record, Funkadelic carved out a unique space—simultaneously funky, trippy and unapologetically bold—and set the stage for the heavier, more refined explorations that followed.
Reviews
"Never again would the band be this attuned to its '60s roots, making self-titled release a revealing and unique record that's certainly not short on significance, clearly marking the crossroads between '60s soul and '70s funk." – Allmusic
“Clinton has been showing his ear for psyche-funk perfection from the very start … this very album … can actually be encapsulated in a single phrase: ‘trippy 60’s soul with guitars’.” — Sputnikmusic
“Clinton and company were adept at penning hook-laden soul nuggets, ‘wayback yonder funk,’ gully blues-rock, sinister gospeldelia, and freak-flag-flying jams.” — Pitchfork
“Funkadelic’s debut LP … still sounds great today.” — uDiscover Music
“The feeling remains raw and downright fucking groovy.” — Head Heritage
