Brazilian music has traditionally played a major role in the releases of the Soul Jazz label. One of the first cross-connections Stuart Baker & Co. made between London and Sugarloaf was the compilation "Brasil", released in 1994. It quickly developed into a key release of the label, but was no longer available since 1998.

On the occasion of the 2018 reissue, the ten songs were digitally remastered. They were recorded in Rio de Janeiro with outstanding and renowned Brazilian artists, including Sivuca (accordion, guitar), Raul de Souza (trombone) and Joyce Moreno (vocals). The reason for the sampler was a hype about music from Brazil that had gripped the British capital at the beginning of the 1990s.

Obsessive connoisseurs of South American sounds such as DJs and label operators Gilles Peterson (Acid Jazz, Talkin 'Loud) and Joe Davis (Far Out Records) were partly responsible, organizing concerts by bossa nova legend Joyce Moreno in London, where she and her husband , drummer Tutty Moreno, performed in front of 2,000 enthusiastic young people. It was thanks to Moreno's network and involvement in the "Brasil" project that Baker and Davis were ultimately able to realize the recordings in Rio.
