The studio’s founding by the sons of the Hookim family—who manufactured slot machines in addition to jukeboxes—was preceded by a crackdown on gambling. From then on, they preferred to record records that could be used to feed the music machines, among other things. The label expanded as far as New York, while the political and social situation in Jamaica grew increasingly tense toward the end of the 1970s. Violence reigned in the streets of Kingston at night.
