  • The grandiose post-bop album "Miles Smiles" from 1967 was recorded with the second of the great quintets under the Miles Davis' patronage. Featuring: Saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, Bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams

The album is an example of Davis's willingness to experiment with less less strict structures, tempos and measures. Although it the conventions of bop, it was not yet free jazz Free jazz

"Miles Smiles" has been praised by critics for its original compositions, the chemistry of the quintet and davis' "phrasing." The album received the Essential!" rating One of the Quintet's best albums!" and "Footprints" and "Dolores" were hailed as "some of the best jazz compositions of all time"

"Miles Smiles is sure to become an important part of the discography of Miles Davis, both for the standout brilliance of the Trumpeter, as well as for the lesson Williams and Carter teach us about the functions and dynamic range of jazz

"But everyone involved "and the solo by Shorter in 'Dolores'.. shorter's solo in 'Dolores' is top notch. And the full-speed bouncer 'Ginger Bread Boy'.. Bread Boy' should put a smile on the faces of '60s jazz.. a smile on their faces." (Good Times, February/March 2015)
