Cut in Paris in 1957 for Louis Malle’s noir film, the sessions are famous for Davis improvising to screen while working with French jazz musicians including Barney Wilen, René Urtreger, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke. The result helped redefine film scoring with a brooding, understated mood that pointed towards modal jazz and the freer, more atmospheric language Miles would develop in the following years.
