Recorded at New York’s Village Vanguard in 1961, it turned the piano trio into a model of conversational interplay rather than soloist-plus-accompaniment. Evans’s harmonically rich piano, LaFaro’s fluid bass lines and Motian’s responsive drumming give standards such as ‘Gloria’s Step’, ‘Solar’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ an unusually open, searching quality.
