The title "The Decalogue" has an air of grandiosity: it means "The Ten Commandments." But this score, composed by Sufjan Stevens for a dance piece choreographed by Justin Peck that premiered with the New York City Ballet in May 2017, is quiet and experimental. Stevens' piano score, as played and recorded by Timo Andres, sounds like etudes in the romantic-modern tradition, as if prompted by Debussy. With "The Decalogue", Sufjan Stevens breaks new ground gently and without ostentation. "Sufjan Stevens is one of the most prolific and utterly talented American songwriters of the 21st century." (NPR) "Stevens remains at the height of his powers -able to work as individually, compassionately, and powerfully as no other American composer working today." (The Washington Post)

"There are two kinds of Sufjan Stevens albums: one for the audience, the other for the artist himself. (...) New in the catalogue now: "The Decalogue", the ten-part piano score to a dance performance by Justin Peck. An album from the second category. (...) In Andres' interpretation, there is no trace of the nights he (Stevens) spent awake over the keyboard and sheet music. With him, "The Decalogue" sounds light-footed and -weight ,in spite of all rigor and commitment to tradition. There are moments on this album when the music almost seems to start bouncing.(...) Music that demands occupation, but also rewards with the same aha-moments that distinguish every good pop song. And perhaps even the end of the distinction between first and second class Stevens albums." (SPIEGEL ONLINE)
