Snarky Puppy – Culcha Vulcha (2xLP)

The seventeen-strong high-flyer band of jazz is bursting with energy. That's not only what you hear in their music, it's also what the breathtaking workload of the Americans shows. Besides tightly timed world tours, the album output is also fast. Now the steadily growing fan community can look forward to the first "real" band album in four years, because after a Grammy-awarded orchestra collaboration ("Sylva", April 2015) and the continuation of their Grammy-awarded guest singer project ("Family Dinner Vol. 2", February 2016), the band is now back to pure experience.
"Culcha Vulcha" not only offers proven groovy snarky puppy sounds, but also successfully develops the musical concept further. This time the purely instrumental tracks are even more catchy and rhythmically gripping, from the opener "Tarova" with its mixture of Caribbean groove and Retro Hammond organ, to the almost film music-like dark track "Gemini" to "Grown Folks" with gloriously loud shuffle funk.
Hypnotic grooves, wind arrangements that can hardly be surpassed in tightness, instrumentalists beyond all doubt: Snarky Puppy are getting better and better!
"Sounding rooted in the demanding fusion sound of the seventies as well as in the polyrhythmic and polyethnic club beats of the present, irrlichtern horn sets, keyboards, powerful guitars whisked through the room to a hypnotic, full-sounding mixture. Strong music!" (stereoplay, June 2016)
"The whole album breathes the air of nonchalance, of the joyful tasting of the possibilities offered by modern improvising music without avant-garde editions." (Jazzthing, June - August 2016)
