Released in 1972, it emerged from the same experimental period that produced Bitches Brew, with Davis working alongside producer Teo Macero and a large cast of players including drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Michael Henderson. Rather than aiming for polished jazz-fusion, the album builds a restless, looping groove that drew from Black American street music as much as it did from jazz tradition.
