Issued in 1956, it brings together recordings from the first great quintet era, when Davis was sharpening his compact, lyrical trumpet voice against some of the most agile modern jazz rhythm sections of the day. The set moves between searching ballad work and driving ensemble pieces, showing why this stretch of his career is so highly regarded. Heard in the context of Davis’s rapid artistic ascent, the compilation captures the hard-bop language he helped shape before later breakthroughs such as Kind of Blue.

Artist: Miles Davis, Horace Silver, J.J.
