  • Denton, Texas is Midlake's hometown and "Van Occupanther" is not the quintet's first album. Back in 2004, the largely overlooked but critically acclaimed debut "Bamnan And Silvercork" was released

Q wrote back then "Not since Mercury Rev's 'Deserter's Songs' has an American band sounded so much just like themselves, so otherworldly and so enchanting," while Logo Magazine proclaimed "At moments, this IS the Flaming Lips. Only better!" Midlake's performance at SXSW 2005 was one of the big attention-grabbers, they cleared the same at Coachella 2005 and have been counted among the "great things to watch in 2006" in the US alternative press at least since then.

Jason Lee, skateboarding legend, actor ("My Name Is Earl" & "Almost Famous") and longtime supporter of Midlake, perhaps says it best when he says: "'The Trials Of Van Occupanther' is already one of the most important modern records I own. Because in an era where people think they have to see everything ironically or casually detached, this record REALLY means something. Simply put, 'Van Occupanther' has backbone. This record isn't trying to fool you. And this gives you hope, because it shows that sincerity can still exist in alternative music today."

WOM Magazin 6/06: "Diversity is, with all atmospheric and emotional coherence atmospheric and emotional coherence, is one of the greatest trump cards of the quintet from the provincial town of Denton. Organs, flutes, Horns, synthesizers - Midlake are not afraid to use whatever no matter which (and how many) instruments are necessary instruments are needed, the result is a smooth but powerful soft, but powerful widescreen sound for demanding indie rock fans."
