Recorded for Folkways in 1964 when Hurley was 22, this debut introduces the homemade world that made him such a singular figure in American folk: just voice, acoustic guitar, and a cast of oddball characters, drinkers, drifters, and dreamers. It is also the first appearance of songs that would become central to his catalogue, including “The Werewolf Song” and “Captain Kidd.”

What makes the album so rewarding is how fully formed it already sounds. Hurley moves easily from the gentle pull of “Blue Mountain” to the sly humour of “I Like My Wine” and “The Tea Song,” with the rambling spirit of “Just a Bum” close by. The stripped-back setting leaves plenty of room for his phrasing, wit, and slightly uncanny storytelling, the same qualities that later earned admiration from artists including Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Lucinda Williams, and Violent Femmes.

First Songs also has a special place in Hurley's discography as the record where many of his lifelong themes first come into focus: wandering, mischief, melancholy, and a casually surreal view of everyday life. For anyone curious about why Hurley became a cult touchstone for freak folk and indie musicians alike, this debut is the clearest place to begin.

Artist: Michael Hurley

Label: Smithsonian Folkways Recordings

Format: LP

Units: 1

Country: US

Genre:
          Country

Style:

            Folk

A1 Blue Mountain
A2 You Get Down By The Pool Hall Clickety-Clack (Sister Song)
A3 I Like My Wine
A4 No, No, No, I Won'T Come (Go) Down No More
A5 The Tea Song
B1 Just A Bum
B2 Raven Rock (They Took Away The Diesel)
B3 Fat Mama
B4 The Animal Song (If I Could Ramble Like A Hound)
B5 Captain Kidd
B6 Intersoular Blues
B7 The Werewolf Song

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1474/5258/files/PROP_20260921_1054_100320_454_p_0093070358119_014.jpg?v=1793934908
