Pianist Lonnie Liston Smith began his actual career as a musician with Pharoah Sanders and then joined Miles Davis and his 'electric' band before embarking on his own journey - a journey that took him deep into the waters of pop music and disco until the late 70s. On "Visions Of A New World", Smith, accompanied by his group The Cosmic Echoes, delves deeper into soul jazz, which he already began to explore on "Expansions" and "Funk Extraction" in 1973 and 1974 respectively. In 1975 Smith was looking for a softer, more soulful groove than he had ever heard before. Elements of the earlier band are visible: The singer Donald Smith is still on board, as well as Dave Hubbard and Cecil Bridgewater as wind players. Reggie Lucas even helps out in one or two places on the guitar, and Ray Armando supports the percussion section. Despite these fiery fellow players, the music here is exclusively a late night seduction/meditation groove.Tracks like the opener "A Chance For Peace" keep the funk in mid-tempo and round off the edges, but "Love Beams" matches his name. "Colours Of The Rainbow" is a duet between Donald and Lonnie on keyboard and vocals, and "Devika" is the first track where the groove overshadows the mood. Latin American rhythms, loosely interwoven brass lines, funky backbeats and a weird melody set highlights.
