Description

"The violin had captivated me completely; for ten years it was my most pious wish to become a great violin virtuoso ...", the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius confessed in later years. And even though he had started his career as a violin virtuoso too late, his intimate knowledge of the finesse and possibilities of the instrument naturally benefited him later. It is precisely the synthesis of virtuoso technical means of expression and classical symphonic form, of external effect and inner substance, which is realized in his violin concerto, which makes this late romantic, wonderfully colorfully instrumented work an extremely grateful task for interpreters. The American violinist Ruggiero Ricci, who specializes primarily in 19th century bravura pieces, brings with his effortlessly supple technique the best prerequisites for a brilliant realization of the demanding concerto. Øivin Fjeldstad is the ideal partner for Ricci in this wonderfully lively recording in two respects. With his training as a conductor and violinist, he ensures the perfect balance between orchestra and soloist, and as a Norwegian, he is naturally very familiar with the Scandinavian repertoire and, as in other recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra, guarantees Nordic depth.
