A groundbreaking Japanese jazz album from 1971. A journey through jazz fusion, soul and big band moods. Impossible to obtain in its original format nowadays.Hozan Yamamoto was recognised as a "living national treasure" by the Japanese government in 2002. This highly sought-after album by the Japanese flutist is more upbeat and swinging than some of his other records. The big band with which he recorded this album (Sharps & Flats) played a major role in creating the groove of the album. It was formed in 1951 and helped popularise jazz in Japan after the Second World War. Yamamoto's flute lines weave over the heavy brass sound and groove, creating an MPS label blend of funky jazz and Japanese vibes. The closest comparison would be Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess / Cadet - with Yamamoto's flute replaced by the harp.
