First released on Chess Records in 1967. Originally, the Super Super Blues Band was just called Super Blues - a collective of blues greats Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. When Little Walter was replaced by Howlin 'Wolf, another "Super" was added to the name and the blues got even wilder: A red hot, irreverent, rollicking celebration of electric blues.Long jam sessions like endless, drunken conversations between friends alternate with unexpected wah-wah guitar passages. The songs are peppered with snippets of conversation that anticipate the call-and-response form of chanting in early hip-hop, plus you hear disordered screams from the background that seem to vacillate between exuberant revelry and real danger. That just these three musicians were in the same room together is amazing, that something so intense, wild and unconventional came out of it, an absolute stroke of luck. This record is a unique document of one lucky coincidence. Add to that the fact that the backing band features none other than Hubert Sumlin, Otis Spann and Buddy Guy! Geez Maybe they should have added a "Super" or two to the band name.
