When Genesis begin work on their fifth album, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, in 1974, the group is on the verge of a shake-up. The record causes strife among the musicians, two camps form - until singer Peter Gabriel finally quits.

Early in the creative process, Genesis determine that The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway will be a double album, only the story is yet to be written. Rutherford proposes an idea inspired by The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, but Gabriel vetoes it. The reasoning: the concept is too "cute." Instead, he presents his colleagues with an idea of his own, which he eventually manages to convince them of. That's why the album now tells the story of Rael, a New York teenager of Puerto Rican descent, who goes on a trip of self-discovery and experiences exciting things.
