Description

"Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya, Hey Now ...", the doctor from New Orleans conjures up psychedelic voodoo blues over the sultry swamp groove. From the title track to the more benevolent sounds in "Mama Roux" to the psychedelic monster track "Walk On Guilded Splinters" (became a hit in Europe in a cover version by Marsha Hunt), this album was in 1968 (produced by Harold Baptiste and recorded for the Atlantic sub-label Atco) something completely new!

It was here that hippies, stoners and acidheads first became aware of New Orleans and Mac Rebenack (which is his real name) became known all over the world in one fell swoop. Great album that lets mangrove trees and lianas grow in your head even without taking appropriate substances.

This fantastic early work (and debut on a major label) was also the musical blueprint for all of his albums up to “Sun, Moon & Herbs” on which world stars like Mick Jagger were listed as “accompanists” on the cover.

But this is another story…...
