At a time when Ashby was too often underestimated because of both her instrument and her place in the late-1950s jazz world, records like this showed just how fully she could turn the harp into a rhythmic, hard-swinging lead voice.

Backed by Herman Wright on bass and Roy Haynes on drums, the quartet moves through standards and originals with real snap and elegance. "Yesterdays" and "Alone Together" show how naturally Ashby and Wess can thread melody through a small-group setting, while "Bohemia After Dark" is the clearest demonstration of Ashby's gift for making the harp behave almost like a rhythm guitar. The result is melodic, airy and grounded at once rather than simply pretty.

The album has also grown in stature well beyond its original release. Ashby's work later became widely sampled and admired by hip-hop and left-field producers, which helps explain why this session is now prized as one of the key early statements in her catalogue. This edition also matters because it restores the album from the original mono sources, rather than the later rechanneled stereo repackaging that reshuffled it as Dorothy Ashby Plays for Beautiful People.

Features

Green & Purple Swirl Vinyl, Limited Edition

Mono, taken from the original mono sources

Original album art and Ira Gitler sleeve notes

Format: LP

Units: 1

Genre:
          Jazz

LP
1.
