That unusual backstory matters: rather than a straightforward comeback, this is a completed unfinished work, with original rhythm tracks cut decades earlier and finished much later at Capitol Studios.

The foundation came from a formidable Los Angeles studio cast, including drummer Earl Palmer, bassist Carol Kaye, and guitarists Howard Roberts and Pete Wyant. Those players give the record its muscular pulse, while Axelrod's later orchestral and horn arrangements open it into something more cinematic and reflective. The result brings together psychedelic rock, jazz-funk, and the dramatic, heavy-limbed arranging style that runs through his late-60s classics.

What makes the album especially compelling is the way Axelrod revisited the material in the late 1990s after connecting with Mo'Wax founder James Lavelle through DJ Shadow. He didn't simply restore an old concept: he added two new pieces and redirected the album toward a more personal meditation on a life in music, shadowed by both triumph and tragedy. Long unavailable on vinyl after its original Mo'Wax release, this Now-Again edition gives a distinctive late chapter in Axelrod's catalogue a welcome return.

Reviews

David Axelrod has created an utterly unique recording with his twelfth album-- one that sounds neither dated, nor of its time. - Pitchfork

Format: LP

Units: 1

Genre:
          Pop & Rock

1.
