"Mystic Familiar" is the result of obsessive drudgery, fiddling around and introspection. And it is also Dan Deacon's most emotionally open and transcendental record. Since the 2015 album Gliss Riffer, Deacon has launched a number of collaborative projects. This includes film music for documentaries, feature films and TV series, as well as compositions with the New York City Ballet choreographer Justin Peck, the LA Philharmonic and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
All great projects, but something was missing: Dan's singing voice. And so, in the slightest lull between these whirlwinds of activity, he always retreated back to his little oasis - to the songs that would become "Mystic Familiar". Deacon's writing took a new, exploratory direction, using therapeutic practices for self-esteem, mindfulness, daily instructions from Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies, and meditation
With the help of these techniques, songs were created that tell life as a psychedelic journey, full of bliss , darkness and light.
