Art Blakey's "Live In '65" presents an extraordinary one-hour concert from 1965 in Paris. This performance is one of the few undocumented Blakey bands, the New Jazzmen, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, Nathan Davis on saxophone and of course Blakey on drums.

Freddie Hubbard's explosive playing on "Blue Moon" and the glowing 24-minute version of his own "Crisis" shows that he was one of the most innovative trumpeters in jazz history.

During this live session the audience seems to have been enthusiastic and appreciative. "Everywhere we went, people were saying, 'These are the best jazz messengers we've ever heard," said Davis. "And because of the way Jaki played and Reggie left, it was like a semi-free thing - with the Messengers band, you know, but when we came to play solo...! And Blakey was driving and setting the pace... but he was always loose enough to follow the soloists, keep things going. He's a hell of a musician."
