  • The story of the South African singer and dancer Penny Penny is ripe for Hollywood. An almost homeless caretaker with no training whatsoever receives a recording contract, becomes a platinum-laden pop star, plays in stadiums across Africa and eventually builds a career as a politician in Nelson Mandela's African National Congress Party.

Penny Penny's debut album "Shaka Bundu", recorded in 1994, is the said album that catapulted 34-year-old Giyani Kulani Kobane from the streets of Johannesburg into political circles. After a chance meeting with the Tsonga Disco producer Joe Shirimani only six months after the end of apartheid, “Shaka Bundu” by Penny Penny was released and shaped the consciousness of an entire country.

Penny Penny, against all odds, was an instant sensation. The album sold 250,000 copies in South Africa alone and was played in stadiums between Liberia, Sierra Leone, Namibia and Mozambique. The music was something new in Tsonga Disco. Slow house rhythms became the basis for the Penny Penny anthems. Using Atari computers, Korg synthesizers and reel-to-reel tape for vocals, the record was recorded in just seven days. Their typical bass sound combined opulence and crispness with the tones of an organ. Penny Penny's rape became his calling card.

After 20 years in which "Shaka Bundu" rang out from the loudspeakers of a free South Africa, the sounds still sound big and urbane.
